WALDO COUNTY TECHNICAL CENTER

Serving Belfast, Searsport and Mount View

literacyWaldo County Technical Center is committed to improving students’ reading and writing skills to help them increase their career opportunities, advance in their chosen fields, and continue on to higher education beyond high school.  Using each class’ curriculum, the literacy coordinator works with teachers and students to model literacy strategies that students can use to improve their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills.

  • Portfolio Development activities at WCTC are an integrated component of all coursework.  The literacy coordinator works with students to develop a comprehensive portfolio that can assist students in getting post-secondary education or finding jobs.  The portfolios are developed over the year or years that students are enrolled in WCTC courses.  Students have opportunities to create resumes and cover letters, refine interview skills, and identify areas of interest for further education or future employment.
  • Scholastic Reading Inventory Testing is computerized reading testing administered to all students each fall again, to underclassmen, in the spring.  The results of testing are used to establish a clearer link between the reading level of course curriculum materials and students’ reading abilities.  Reading scores also help instructors identify students who may need extra support with coursework.
  • Accuplacer Test Preparation includes a 15-minute weekly lesson prepared by the literacy coordinator and given to all WCTC students to help them prepare for the college placement Accuplacer test and to improve their writing skills.  The lessons incorporate questions from past Accuplacer tests and teach students to recognize and correct grammatical and sentence structure errors.

literacy 1The Literacy Program at WCTC includes two major components: literacy coaching and portfolio development.

Coaching is available to any instructor at any time during the school year.  Coaching can take many forms: providing resources to instructors, assisting with literacy lesson planning, providing weekly mini lessons for Accuplacer preparation, modeling literacy strategies in the classroom, and observing instructors teaching literacy strategies and providing feedback.
