WALDO COUNTY TECHNICAL CENTER

Preparing Students for Career, College, & Community

literacy

Waldo County Technical Center is committed to improving students’ reading and writing skills to help them increase their career opportunities, advance in their chosen fields, and continue on to higher education beyond high school.  The Literacy Coach works with teachers and students to strengthen, apply and improve these skills in a friendly small group or individualized setting.  WCTC has a teacher/student library.  The literacy coach recommends books for class readings, and allows individual students to borrow books from the library.

The Reading Inventory Test (Lexile) is a computerized reading test given to all students each fall and to underclassmen in the spring.   The results of the testing are used to establish a clearer link between the reading level of course curriculum materials and students’ reading abilities.  These scores are shared with the school counseling and English departments of each partner high school.

Accuplacer Test Preparation is available to Juniors/Seniors to help prepare for the college placement Accuplacer test.  Student review sessions incorporate sample questions from the exam while the Literacy coach emphasizes test-taking strategies.

The Literacy coach can work with seniors to develop a comprehensive portfolio, which includes a resume, cover letter, work samples, letters of reference, testing results, certifications and awards.  The portfolio can also assist seniors with securing employment and post-secondary education and earning scholarship money.
