Dear Students, Families and WCTC Supporters,
Greetings! I hope that you have all managed to stay healthy, and have experienced a positive and productive summer. As we quickly approach the start of our 2020-2021 school year, I just wanted to let you know about our WCTC reopening plans. While the ongoing pandemic has surely changed a number of things about how we operate, our mission of providing the best possible technical education here for Waldo county residents has NOT; “Protecting the families that we love” will certainly serve as one of our guiding principles, as we move forward!
First and foremost, we ARE “Open For Business”, and will be here operating as close to 100% normal capacity as possible, both during our day time and evening Adult Education sessions. Enrolled high school students, regardless of chosen CTE program, first or second year status or partner school schedule, are strongly encouraged to be here daily, beginning Wednesday, September 2. Acknowledging that transportation might be a challenge for some students, we have altered our driving policies accordingly, to allow as many (approved) drivers to transport themselves only directly to/from WCTC, especially when bus transportation is not available.
From a safety standpoint, all staff members, students and visitors MUST adhering to the state requirements as laid out in their Framework for Returning to Classroom Instruction https://www.maine.gov/doe/framework, as found on the Maine Department of Education website. These mandates, e.g., face coverings, hand sanitizing, distancing, etc., are to be considered non-negotiables and essential to keeping everyone as healthy as possible. Additionally, we have established school specific safety precautions and protocols, which will be explained directly to students during their safety orientation, prior to the Add/Drop period in late September.
As a number of traditional schools have provided optional remote learning opportunities for their students, please understand that the nature of CTE (Career and Technical Education) does NOT lend itself to such “opt out” allocations. While some of the academic components of certain programs CAN be delivered remotely, the hands-on learning and skill development phases of specialized, trade-based curricula require physical attendance, direct supervision and progress monitoring by the instructor. For this reason, ALL enrolled students are encouraged to attend WCTC as frequently as they can be here. To assure progress towards Student Learning Objectives, instructors will be tracking attendance and proficiency attainment in multiple modalities, thus providing individualized, differentiated instruction and remediation for each and every student. This will be critical for those students who wish to attain certifications and credentials of value, within their chosen programs of study, especially as they look to continue learning more about their craft, beyond their time here.
FInally, for those of you who are driving to the tech center, please take note of the new traffic patterns which you will surely observe. In certain areas, we’ve established one-way traffic arrows for additional safety, as part of our ongoing school improvement plan. As always, we remind people to use caution and prudent speed when entering/exiting school property, as well as coming around corners. In advance, thank you for your support of WCTC, and please feel free to contact us for any further information. We’re not “perfect”, but we ARE doing our very best for you and the greater Waldo county community, and will keep you updated as best we can. Take care and enjoy the rest of your summer!!!
